Crisis Management

A crisis can happen at anytime and anywhere. This is why I think one of the most beneficial classes we had in management two was on crisis management. While a crisis is terrible no matter what the case, in a healthcare setting there should be even more caution. I am a big fan of the show Greys Anatomy, and in this show while it is fiction, they depict crisis’s very well. They have shown on site shooters, a computer hack, a fire in the building, and so much more. Of course the point of these are to create drama within the television show, it also does highlight some accurate steps that would have to be taken when such casualties occur.
One basic rule of thumb shown in Greys Anatomy, but also applies in real life is to act early. This is very crucial in handling the media, because news reporters will be on site sooner then expected, and the earlier someone within the organization can put a statement out, the better things will be handled. Nothing is worse then letting false news become the top story. Taking action right away will also lead to the end of the crisis faster. No matter what type of crisis is at hand, the patients and staff will all benefit the most the second things return to normal.
Returning back to my analogy with Greys Anatomy, the doctors all immediately step into action and contribute as much as they can, as fast as they can. Miranda Bailey (a character on the show) eventually becomes the Chief of Surgery. In this role, she tries to delegate tasks to each surgeon to make sure every one is on task, getting the most out of their time. There really are so many different ways to compare crisis management throughout this show, I hope fellow fans of Greys Anatomy agree with me and for any readers who have never watched it before, I encourage everyone to watch a few episodes so you can see crisis management depicted on screen.

Here is an article that explores 7 steps to take during a hospital crisis:

  1. I like how you related our class on crisis management to Greys Anatomy. Even though it is fictional there are definitely lessons that can be learned from it. There are a lot of shows that we can learn from. I liked how our class this semester incorporated a lot of videos from The Office. Clips from these shows can be a fun way to get points across.
