Being Prepared
Throughout my junior year in college I have realized I have the ability to speak in public without complete embarrassment, but it takes me a while to get there. In my management two class I have now done two separate, one hour and twenty minute presentations with two of my peers. The first one was very average. I was definitely nervous and slightly under prepared. I had not practiced the presentation in its entirety and that was very clear to me as I was standing in front of my class mates preparing to talk about a slide. With every word that came out of my mouth, I could feel it all unraveling to a sentence that made little to no sense. So after that experience, I was not about to repeat any of those mistakes. For my second presentation, I met with my group and rehearsed the whole presentation. By doing this, I gained confidence in how everything was going to be done. I did more researched and got a better grasp of the material I was trying to teach my classmates. And after presenting I realized how much better off I was just by being more prepared. I avoided the anxiety and the rambling on about stuff that I wasn't even fully comprehending.
By doing these presentations I really understand the importance of being prepared. In any work setting, it will always be beneficial walking into something with a little background; whether that be for a presentation, applying to a job, meeting someone knew, etc. It makes it more comfortable for yourself and the people around you when there is a known component. I am very happy I'm in a class with such a heavy component of public speaking because it has taught me so much.
You did great on your presentation! You knew your information, was able to talk about it well and made an impression on me about power and influence. I'm really glad that feeling prepared helped you be more confident and it definitely showed. Great work!
ReplyDeleteMolly, I really enjoyed your second presentation. I thought it was really fun and engaging. I am glad you felt more comfortable the second time around. I am hoping the same for my next presentation!
ReplyDeleteI think you are being much too hard on yourself for your first presentation. Your group did do much better on the second one. Public speaking is all about practice.
ReplyDeletePreparation is so important! I thought your second presentation went very well, and it was very clear you had practiced and knew your slides!
