Character in the Work Place
Another great topic from my management class was Character. I thought I had a well understanding on the subject, how ever I learned character goes into a lot more depth, specifically in the workplace. My classmates that presented did a great job in going through each part of character that is shown in managers and employees.
This made me think of the job I currently have and how my managers reflect their own character. We learned the six pillars of character are Trustworthiness, Resect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Out of these six I reflected most on trustworthiness because I believe it is the most important to have in the workplace. Without trust, work load can not be spread evenly and more time will be wasted through out every project. I work at Union Court, a dinning service within UNH. Within this organization my managers trust that I treat customers with courtesy and respect, they trust I follow all protocols to keep sanitary, such as wearing gloves when serving food, and they trust that I'm not wasting their time. If there was no trust in this, they would not be able to do their own jobs as managers because they would be worried about me not performing my job correctly and potentially taking over al my responsibilities. Another important step in trustworthiness is that it is earned. A good boss does not give trust blindly, because a lot of times one needs to learn how to do new things. In my first week at Union Court I was trained and worked side by side with another employee, and then was given the trust to work independently.
I also learned it is equally as important to give trust to your employees as it is to make sure your employees trust you. I can also see this within my job because I do trust my managers that they will be there when I need help. I am able to talk to them when something isn't going as it should because I trust they will take the next steps to fix the problem. Overall, this lecture from my fellow students really showed me the importance of character in the workplace.

Nice reflection on the value of trust.
