Post Interview Thoughts

Today I had an interview at a Hospital with a person who had a clinical background while working in a management position. In fact the greater part of his career was in the clinical side of health care and just couple years back he switched over to the business side of health care to experience a new type of career. When he was telling me about his prior work experience, all I could think about was how much that must help him working at his current position. In many of the HMP classes I have taken at UNH, it has been repeated across classes that there is a divide between medical staff (doctors/nurses) and the administrative side. I asked him if he saw that within the hospital he worked at and he agreed with my professors.
I can see it being very frustrating to work in this environment because both clinical and administrative roles are equally as important. A successful health care setting could not exist without one another. I think this divide exists because everyone knows about extensive training doctors go through and they know exactly what they have done with their career. Where as, administrators are in some way the opposite. No one recognizes all the projects administrators have achieved or what they have a masters’ degree in except for other employees on the business side. Because of this, I believe it is important to accept and be happy with the fact that having a career in this field puts you on the "behind the scenes" action. For myself, I am more then okay with this because as long as I am doing something that makes a difference in the world I will be happy.

  1. I think it's best to be aware of this cultural divide so that you do not get caught by surprise, and realize that you will have to work around it to some degree.
